It is widely believed that when animals visit us in our dreams, they are there as a spirit guide to show the dreamer the part of their character that needs attention. ‘Wild At Heart’ is a collection of oil paintings that look at human characteristics assigned to spirit animals. The connection with the natural world and animal kingdom is depicted through repetitive patterns; such as the foliage surrounding the dreamlike impression of an animal’s head.
A stylised symbol of a DNA strand reaches into a sea of circles, to enhance the feeling of connection between human and animal; are the animals’ characteristics embedded in our DNA to form part of our identity, or do we project our identities on to the animals? The circles represent all the people and events in our lives spinning around us like wheels or cogs of a machine. From a distance, they appear to blend in and are not easily distinguishable as individual, unique forms; however, some are larger, some darker, some rise to the top, some drift behind, all are imperfect, much like we are.
